GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Members of the American Legion Post 16 honored local Korean War veterans in a very special way.
In honor of the 57th anniversary of the start of the Korean War, the post and its members hosted a lunch Sunday along with the Korean War Veterans Association.
The post began the lunch with two short videos and a reflection on the war itself.
"Remember that the motto of the Korean War Veterans, and oftentimes the [American] Legion does the same thing, is that freedom is not free. Somebody's gotta step up and stand up and defend this country," said Don Sherry, Adjutant - Korean War Veterans Association).
During the lunch, many attending veterans were able to look back on their own service.
"The people, their love for us was always there no matter what. They knew we were there to protect them, and we did everything in our worldly power to do that," said Ronald Carbaugh, 2nd Vice Commander - Korean War Veterans Association.
An estimated 30 guests were anticipated to attend.
Post 16 says that although this is only their second annual appreciation lunch, they hope to do the same again next year.
